Over the years, Guðmundur has examined the theme of masculinity and the status of the patriarchy, both criticizing and ridiculing it, but also exalting it. The humorous and self-critical works are made of varied but conventional media, such as clay, watercolour, drawing and painting. Whereas the subject matter has, until now, often been bearded men, engaged in various activities, like playing basketball, brewing beer or going hunting, the imagery has lately become more and more abstract.

Guðmundur Thoroddsen was born in 1980, but he graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Icelandic University of the Arts in 2003 and with an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2011. He has taken part in many exhibitions both in Iceland and abroad. Notable exhibitions include the private exhibitions Father’s Fathers in 2012, Hobby and Work in 2013 and Dismantled Spirits at the Asya Geisberg Gallery in New York in 2016.
