Karlmenn og tilfinningar virðast oft ekki eiga samleið – karlmenn sem tjá tilfinningar sínar opinskátt eiga í hættu á að vera taldir veikgeðja „kerlingar” og ef þeir tjá öðrum karlmönnum væntumþykju á líkamlegan hátt hættir fólki til að tengja það við samkynheigð. Þetta er óheppileg afleiðing staðalímynda karla í samfélaginu þar sem þeir eiga að vera „karlmannlegir” menn sem sýna ekki tilfinningar sínar. Samfélagið tekur sem gefnu að karlar séu ekki eins tilfinninganæmir og konur en eins og er vitað er það ekki sannleikanum samkvæmt.

 

Á fótboltavellinum eru reglurnar aðrar þegar um er að ræða tjáningu karla á tilfinningum sínum og vakti það meðal annars áhuga Rakelar McMahon þegar hún vann að röð verkanna, View of Motivation. Fótboltalið er hópur ellefu karlmanna sem eru ímynd karlmennskunnar; Manna sem samt sem áður hika ekki við að sýna sterkar tilfinningar og hlýhug hver til annars á leikvellinum. Þar má sjá kossa, faðmlög, flengingar, hopp á hvern annan ásamt ágengni og öskrum. Völlurinn er sannkallaður hrærigrautur tilfinninga. Leikmenn fá tækifæri til að vera nánir öðrum karlmönnum og sýna tilfinningar sínar frammi fyrir stórum áhorfendahópi án þess að vera dæmdir.

 

Í málverkunum sýnir Rakel leikmennina nakta og úr samhengi í heimilislegu umhverfi. Nektin gerir það að verkum að nánast andlitslausar fígúrurnar eru berskjaldaðar og sögusviðið virðist kynferðislegt. Sumir karlarnir klæðast háhæluðum skóm, sem lögð er áhersla á með rauðum hring, sem vísar í kvenleika og klæðskiptingu. Hún gagnrýnir staðalímyndir karla á gamansaman hátt með því að leggja áherslu á tengingu milli samkynheigðar og einlægrar væntumþykju meðal karlmanna sem brýst út í frekar fáránlegu sögusviði.

 

Rakel McMahon (f. 1983) býr og starfar á Íslandi. Hún útskrifaðist með B.A. gráðu í myndlist frá Listaháskóla Íslands árið 2008, diplóma gráðu í hagnýtri jafnréttisfræði við Háskóla Íslands árið 2009 og M.A. Ed. í listkennslufræðum frá Listaháskóla Íslands árið 2014. Verk hennar hafa verið sýnd á Íslandi og víða erlendis. Hún hefur komið nálægt rekstri á nokkrum listamannareknum sýningarrýmum en hún er ein af stofnendum Gallerí Klósett sem var starfrækt árin 2011 og 2012. Jafnframt skipar hún annan helminginn af gjörningartvíeykinu Wunderkind Collective sem hún, ásamt skáldinu Bergþóru Snæbjörnsdóttur, stofnuðu árið 2011. Núna situr hún í stjórn Nýlistasafnsins.

Men and emotions – an awkward combination indeed. Men who openly express their emotions run the risk of being considered weak and effeminate and should they display physical affection for other men the gesture may very likely be interpreted as being homosexual. This is an unfortunate consequence of how society stereotypes men, with males being expected to be ‘manly’ speciments who keep their feelings well under wraps. Society works on the generally-held assumption that men are less emotional than women, but as we know now, this is a myth.

 

But put men on a football field and the code of behaviour governing male emotional expression changes entirely. And that is what fascinated Rakel McMahon when creating her new series of works, View of Motivation. A football team is comprised of eleven men who are the epitome of masculinity; yet they have no hesitation about showing their emotions and their affection towards each another on the pitch. There is kissing, hugging, bum slapping, jumping on each other, along with intense outbursts of aggression and screamming. It is a veritable whirlpool of emotions out there. Players have the freedom to be intimate towards team mates without it being misconstrued and they can openly display their emotions in front of thousands if not millions of spectators.

 

This is one of the main themes in McMahon’s series, View of Motivation. In her paintings the football players are taken out of context and portrayed naked in a domestic setting. The nudity makes the almost faceless figures vulnerable and the scenes have a sexual tone to them. Some even wear high-heeled shoes, highlighted with a circle, a referance to femininity and transvestism. McMahon underscores male stereotyping in a humorous way by emphasizing the homoerotic aspect of male affection when found in a fairly absurd setting.

 

Rakel McMahon (b. 1983) lives and works in Iceland. She obtained a B.A. degree in Fine Arts from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2008 and a year later she received a M.A. diploma of Applied Gender Studies from the University of Iceland. In 2014 she graduated with a M.A. Ed. in art education from the Icelandic Academy of the Arts. Her works have been exhibited at various locations, both in Iceland and internationally. McMahon has been active in running artist run exhibition spaces in Reykjavik and is one of the founders of Gallery Klosett which was active in the years 2011 and 2012. Since 2011 she has been part of the performance duo, Wunderkind Collective, along with poet Bergþóra Snæbjörnsdóttir. Currently she is a member of the board of The Living Art Museum (NÝLÓ) in Reykjavik.
