Overview
Kristín Morthens, Að teygja tvílýsið // We Got Time
Að teygja tvílýsið fjallar um það að staldra við í óvissu og lengja það augnablik áfram. Miðnætti á íslensku sumri - hvorki dagur né nótt - verður tákn umbreytinga, endurnýjunar og möguleika.
Serían sækir innblástur í Jónsmessu, þann tíma þegar skilin milli heima þynnast og náttúran er kyngimögnuð. Hugmyndin endurspeglar bæði von og ótta á tímamótum, augnablik þegar allt virðist mögulegt og tíminn teygist.
Að teygja tvílýsið hófst með kynningu á Market Art Fair sem formáli að einkasýningnni í Þulu.

Kristín Morthens (f. 1992)
Málverk Kristínar Morthens kanna þemu eins og mörk, nánd og aðskilnað í gegnum form eða fígúrur sem staðsettar eru í abstrakt umhverfi á fletinum. Þessi tvíræðu form taka gjarnan þátt í látbragði sem bendir til nálægðar án fullrar tengingar - teyga sig, toga eða falla inn á við - og vísa þannig til augnablika þar sem samskipti eða tilfinningaleg spenna hanga í loftinu.
Rannsókn hennar á þessum hliðarveruleika birtist einnig í lagskiptri efnisnotkun þar sem hún vinnur með olíu og blek (airbrush). Með markvissum skyggingingum skapar Kristín andstæður á yfirborði og áferð sem leggja áherslu á jaðarrýmið milli nærveru og fjarveru, efnisleika og andrýmis. Þetta samspil miðla mótar sjónrænt tungumál snertingar og fjarlægðar.
Kristín hefur sýnt víða á Íslandi og erlendis og verk hennar eru í bæði opinberum og einkasöfnum. Meðal valinna sýninga eru Öxull (2024), duo sýning með Scott Everingham í Þulu; List er okkar eina von (2025), samsýning í Listasafni Reykjavíkur; og einkasýning hennar Andrými á hafsbotni árið 2023 í Þulu.
Kristín Morthens býr og starfar í Reykjavík á Íslandi.

We Got Time explores the act of pausing within uncertainty and extending that moment forward. Twilight – neither day nor night – becomes a symbol of transformation, transition, and possibility.
The series is inspired by Jónsmessa (Midsummer), a time when the veil between worlds thins and nature is at its most potent. The concept reflects both hope and fear at turning points – moments when everything feels possible and time seems to stretch.
We Got Time started at Market Art Fair as a prologue to her solo exhibition at Þula.

Kristín Morthens (b. 1992)
Kristín Morthens’ paintings navigate themes of boundaries, intimacy, and separation through fragmented, limb-like figures situated within abstracted spatial environments. These ambiguous forms often engage in gestures of near-connection - reaching, pulling, or folding inward - suggesting moments of suspended interaction or emotional tension.
Her exploration of corporeality is underscored by layered material processes, incorporating oil, ink and spray paint. Through strategic masking techniques, Morthens creates contrasts in surface and texture that emphasize the liminal space between presence and absence, materiality and illusion. This interplay of media articulates a visual language of touch and distance, evoking psychological and physical thresholds.
Morthens has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally, with works held in both public and private collections.
Selected exhibitions include Axis (2024) a duo exhibition with Scott Everingham at Þula; Art is Our Only Hope (2025), a group exhibition at the Reykjavík Art Museum; and her 2023 solo exhibition Air Under Water, at Þula.
Kristín Morthens lives and works in Reykjavík, Iceland.
