Kristinn E. Hrafnsson: Tveir áttungar - Hverfisgallerí

Tveir áttungar nefnist önnur einkasýning Kristins E. Hrafnssonar í Hverfisgalleríi.

Titill sýningarinnar dregur heiti sitt af stálskúlptúr sem samanstendur af tveimur áttungum úr kúlu. Formin eiga rætur sínar í geometríu siglinga- og stjörnufræði og standa hér fyrir hluta af heild. Orðið átt, í merkingunni stefna, er að mati Kristins dregið af áttundaparti úr hring, en í fornu máli voru áttir aðeins átta að tölu. Átta-verk Kristins eiga það sameiginlegt að vera byggð á almennum, en um leið heimspekilegum vangaveltum um stöðu mannsins, skilning hans á umhverfi sínu og hvernig náttúran mótar sýn hans og samskipti. Tréskúlptúrarnir þrír, Miður morgun, Hádegi og Aftan, tengjast einnig vangaveltum Kristins um gang himintunglanna og birtingarmyndir líðandi stundar.

Að mati Kristins hefur ljóðlist sömu virkni og myndlist; hún býr yfir þeim eiginleika að vera skynjuð frekar en skilin til fulls. Í grafíkverkunum á sýningunni kannar Kristinn þanþol ljóðaformsins og möguleikana á því að teygja það yfir í myndlistina með því að myndgera skynjun sína á ljóðum og segja má að myndin taki við þar sem tungumálinu sleppir.

Í verkunum RÚM og SÚM má greina náin tengsl við hefð konseptlistar sjöunda áratugarins þar sem hugmyndin að baki listaverkinu verður grundvallandi þáttur þess. Verkin samdi Kristinn á ritvél á námsárum sínum í Þýskalandi á níunda áratugnum og sverja þau sig í ætt við konkretljóðlist sjötta og sjöunda áratugarins þar sem lögð var áhersla á myndræna framsetningu leturtáknsins og hugmyndarinnar.

Konkretljóðin og grafíkverkin eiga það sameiginlegt að fjalla um mörkin á milli ritmáls og myndmáls og á það eins við um verkið Konstellasjón – (Tileinkað B.A.). Þrátt fyrir að titill verksins vísi til mengis fyrirbæra, tákna eða stjarna og innbyrðis afstöðu þeirra, gefur hann þó lítið upp um eiginlega merkingu verksins. Undirtitill verksins vísar í tilurð þess og þar við situr og myndin ein blasir við.

Þrátt fyrir að efniður myndverkanna og skúlptúranna sé ólíkur eiga verkin það sameiginlegt að vera sveipuð ljóðrænu sem laðar fram tilfinningalega upplifun áhorfandans og fær hann til þess að hugsa um heiminn í nýju ljósi. Verk Kristins fjalla um margbreytileikann í heiminum, eða eins og listamaðurinn orðaði það: „Allt hefur tvær hliðar…í það minnsta. Það er engin kyrrstaða. Allt hreyfist.“

Kristinn E. Hrafnsson er fæddur árið 1960 á Ólafsfirði. Hann stundaði nám í Myndlistaskólanum á Akureyri og Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands og lauk framhaldsnámi í Akademie der Bildenden Künste í München í Þýskalandi árið 1990. Á ferli sínum hefur Kristinn gert fjölda verka sem hafa verið sýnd á Íslandi og víða um Evrópu og er verk hans að finna í öllum helstu listasöfnum á Íslandi.

Two Octants is Kristinn E. Hrafnson’s second solo exhibiton at Hverfisgalleri.

The exhibition draws its name from a large steel sculpture consisting of two octants within a ball. The forms are rooted in the geometry of sailing and astronomy and stand as parts of a whole. The word direction, or átt in Icelandic, is in Kristinns opinion derived from the octant ( áttund in Icelandic) of a circle, but in ancient language the directions were only eight. Kristinn’s direction-works are all based on common, but at the same time philosophical speculations about the state of mankind and its understanding of the environment and how nature shapes its vision and communication. The wood sculptures, Mid-morning, Noon and Night, are also associated with Kristinn’s speculations about the orbit of the stars and the manifestation of current events.

For Kristinn, poetry has the same function as art; it possesses the qualities to be percieved rather than fully understood. In the graphic works in the exhibition, Kristinn explores the tensility of the poetic form and the possibilities to stretch it into an image by visualizing his perception of poetry. He attempts to replace the language with an image of a form which expresses that which cannot be brought into words.

The works RÚM and SÚM have close ties with the tradition of conseptual art of the sixties, where the idea behind the artwork becomes its fundamental element. Kristinn wrote the poems on an typewriter while studying in Germany in the eighties and the works are closely related to the concrete poetry of the fifties and the sixties, which focused on graphical representation of letters.

Kristinn’s concrete poems and the graphic works have many similarities; considering the boundaries between writing and imagery, and does it also apply to the work Konstelasjón – (Dedicated to B.A.). Although the title of the work refers to a set of objects, symbols, stars, and their relative positions, Kristinn does not reveal the actual meaning of it. The subtitle of the work refers to its genesis and only the image is exposed.

Despite the different materials used in the graphic works and the sculptures, all the works share a certain lyricism, evoking an emotional experience within the audience and having them think about the world in a new light. Kristinn’s works explore the complexities of the world, or as the artist put it, “Everything has two sides…at least. There is no stillness. Everything moves.”

Kristinn E. Hrafnsson was born in 1960 in Ólafsfjörður, Iceland. He studied at the Icelandic Collage of Arts and Crafts and finished his graduate studies at Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München, Germany in 1990. Kristinn’s works have been exhibited widely in Iceland and in Europe, and his works belong to all of Iceland’s major museums.
